Evaluation - Signs, Symbols & Semiotics

In the beginning my collective and I thought that the task to create a whole wayfinding system for North Greenwich in only one week is tough and really stressful. However, we started with the brief right away and managed to finish it before the deadline. On Monday we visited the North Greenwich Station and created a questionnaire to find more out about the already existing navigation signs. Referring to our trip it really helped us to get inspired for our final outcome. Furthermore it showed us that sometimes it is necessary to involve a wide range of people to create something that talks or response or even helps them. Working in my group was really fun and effective. Everybody focused on the brief and had different ideas on how to come up with a general system. I also think that it is important to learn working in groups because usually when you work as a designer you need to be able to cooperate and be a part of a group. I also enjoyed working with my two peers because I

Process - Signs, Symbols & Semiotics

We started the project by going together in collectives of three. What are the problems of the current wayfinding system in North Greenwich? To answer this question we created a questionnaire with open and closed questions to ask several people walking around North Greenwich. We looked for all different characters to have a wide range of interests such as station workers, visitors, tourists and students. In the beginning it was hard to find people who were willing to answer our questions because they either were not interested or were in a hurry. However, we were able to collected several opinions. After our short trip we evaluated the answers and came to the conclusion that the current way finding system had a lot of lacks that should be improved. To be able to improve the whole system we brainstormed all the current problems and started thinking about the improvements. The way finding system in North Greenwich appeals to workers, students, visitors, touri

Portfolio

Designing a great and unique portfolio is one of the most important things to get into a good university or a job. The main aim is to show the best of my work. Regarding to that it is not just about final outcomes but also about experimentation and variation. A good portfolio reflects you as a creative designer, your knowledge about techniques and you  variety . To show that it is necessary to think about the layout and the typography representing your best works. The placement of your images and the scale of them also needs to be considered to make a good impression.  Basically your portfolio is a vital element that shows  your   ability of  conceptual thinking. This past week I concentrated on designing the most Strong portfolio I could create. To be able to that I was looking at all my work that I have done during the last few month choosing the strongest ones. I included different techniques to show off my knowledge and way of experimenting. Furthermore I included s

Modular Type - Edges and Curves

What is the secret that makes a good logo a rememberable sign? Looking at the harmony between edges and curves helped me to understand why logos harmonize so many times. The Modular Type Workshop gave us a kit with different shapes which we had to use. For this task I thought about using some of those shapes and adding a detail in form as a red triangle to it. Regarding to that the typeface that I would create would attract attention by using a light - dark - contrast, a shape - contrast (curves and edges) as well as a colour - non-colour -contrast (black, white in contrast to red). I started with looking at different brands and their logos. I realized that they always include a combination from curves and edges which causes a smooth transition within the image. I also look at some graphics which include a play between the colours as well as curves and edges. Bansri Thakkar is a student who designed a poster which inspired me. Then I started designing m

Modular Type - One-Day Workshop

This workshop helped me to understand the importance of communicating and discussing in collectives as well as splitting the work to be able to create a harmonizing typeface in a short period of time. The main brief told us to create 62 glyphs (alphabet upper and lower case, numbers) using specific shapes from a kit. The first rule that we had to follow was to include all different shapes from this kit. We started our work by dividing all glyphs by 12 group members. For this task we just had to design the uppercase letters as well as the numbers. Each of us had to create 3 different letters/ numbers.  I came up with designs for the numbers 7, 8 and 9.  Because of the short period of time that we had to observe it was important to focus and do not get lost in the design of one letter. I managed my time well so I was able to experiment with a couple designs for each number.  Looking at our groups outcome I liked the unique letters. Evaluating the w
